Why goose down duvets?
White goose down is one of the warmest types of down available and when used within duvets makes one of the best type of insulators. Geese have a tough life, each year they spend a vast amount of time flying between hot and cold destinations which means that during the time they spend in cold climates they have to be kept warm and in warm climates, they have to be kept cool. The make up of their feathers is the key factor in ensuring that this happens.
This is the main reason why goose down makes the perfect filling for duvets, their specific makeup ensures that during times when it’s cold, the duvet keeps the warmth in and in times or warm weather, it keeps you nice and cool. A goose down duvet is the perfect type of filling you need for the ultimate nights sleep.
Types of Goose down?
Goose down duvet are available with various different types of goose down; Hungarian goose down, Canadian goose down and Siberian down. Canadian geese come from some of the harshest climates in the world, with temperatures dipping down to minus 40 centigrade, their feathers have to be up to the job of keeping them warm otherwise these poor birds would die! Not only that but other factors such as the rearing of the geese, the environment that they’re bread in, the age of the geese at which they’re processed for their feathers and the filling power of the feathers (over 700 which makes them the warmest type of own on this planet!).
While Canadian goose down may be viewed as the best type of filling, Hungarian goose down is seen as the best type of filler in the world which stands hands and feet above all other fillers. So, what makes Hungarian goose down so good? Well, for a start these geese are bread in wide open spaces and generally to a height and weight which no other geese are grown to specifically for their feathers. While the Canadian birds have a high filling power, Hungarian geese have an average which is over 700 which makes their down some of the warmest in the world!

Siberian goose down generally comes from the Far East and while there is nothing wrong with it, it is the lowest quality down from the three types of goose down that is available. The average filling power is in the region of 500 - 600 which means that it could be quite heavy in weight which could lead to the duvet being flatter than expected. Due to the climate that the geese are reared in, they tend to be very brittle which means the down is of lower quality than its Canadian and Hungarian counterparts.
What should I go for?
Well, I would say that where possible you should always go for a duvet which has the best type of filler, which would be Hungarian goose down purely for its high quality, the warmth it provides and the pure luxury of the filler. While Canadian down is a close second Hungarian goose down duvets are the most widely available and can be purchased from a number of different outlets including Duvet and Pillow Warehouse, John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser.
